From the USWNT’s struggles to other surprises and upsets, the Urban Pitch Podcast crew links up with Lizzy Calderon to talk all things Women’s World Cup in the latest episode!
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is in full swing. Now in the knockout rounds, it’s win or go home time, and we’ve already seen tense penalty shootouts, fantastic goals, and controversial moments in the round of 16 alone.
Perhaps the biggest storyline so far is the United States women’s national team’s loss to Sweden, which marks the world No. 1’s earliest exit from the tournament in its storied history. It wasn’t that much of a surprise however.
Recorded before the match, the Urban Pitch Podcast crew (along with many other pundits and fans, for that matter) plus special guest Lizzy Calderon weren’t very certain of a USWNT victory over No. 3-ranked Sweden. Questionable performances in the group stage didn’t do much to spark their confidence in the team, and Sweden was no slouch of an opponent either. They even went as far to predict the 0-0 penalty shootout.
They also discuss some of the surprises of the tournament thus far, including Morocco, Jamaica, Colombia, and South Africa making it out of their respective groups, along with the disappointments of Canada, Germany, and Brazil, who exited the tournament early.
Everything points to more excitement and drama as the World Cup progresses, and we’ll definitely keep our eyes glued to our TVs, even in the wee hours of the morning.
