Earlier today, LAFC met with the Los Angeles City Council and received the green light to break ground on their $250 million stadium project. Expectations are high for this new state-of-the-art soccer stadium that will be built on the current site of the Sports Arena, located close to the heart of downtown Los Angeles.
Tom Penn, LAFC Co-Owner and President, was excited about the landmark moment for the club. “We’re thrilled to unveil the new Black and Gold LAFC Stadium renderings today, on the heels of the Los Angeles City Council approval of our stadium project. This is a significant milestone we have been working toward for the past 18 months. We couldn’t be more proud of the club we are developing and the devoted soccer fans that have inspired this work.”
We feel the timing is perfect for the world’s game to finally live in the heart of our city …
Timing couldn’t be better for the club’s world-class facility to come onto the scene as there’s been an unprecedented surge in the game’s popularity. We’ve previously highlighted the increasing participation in pickup games throughout the city, along with the exciting rise of street football. The trend has not gone unnoticed by LAFC, which Executive Vice President of Marketing, Joanne Wong, was apt to point out. “We feel the timing is perfect for the world’s game to finally live in the heart of our city, and you can see evidence that people are hungry and excited for soccer, with pickup games being played throughout the streets, something you didn’t see 5 to 10 years ago. Los Angeles is a special city with a rich, diverse culture, and we’re looking forward to celebrating the beautiful game with all its players and fans.”
This new era represents a community of fans joined across city lines and socioeconomic boundaries. It brings to light the deep friendships made, the crosstown rivalries, and the varied ways the game is being played, from the street to the professional pitch. The new LAFC stadium will no doubt find a welcome home in a pulsating city of football lovers.
