A new Urban Pitch series, 5 Kits That Defined a Career will do exactly what the title suggests — and we start it off with a bang.
We all know Thierry Henry as a player, pundit, and a coach. Cool, calm, charismatic. He’s regarded as one of the best players of all time, having won titles in the Premier League, La Liga, Champions League, Ligue 1, and even the World Cup.
His career spanned many countries and gave us many beautiful moments. From a raw teenager failing in school before making his debut in Ligue 1, to a treble winner in Spain, Henry has done it all.
And as football shirt nerds, there’s a kit attached to each and every moment. Symbols of his highs and lows, Henry has a career that can be stamped by football shirts. So, from his time in North London to playing for Les Blues, I’m picking out five kits that define Thierry Henry’s career. Let’s dive in…
Monaco 1996-97 Home

Henry was given his debut at Monaco in 1994 by one Arsene Wenger. The French manager deployed him on the left wing, despite thinking he was more suited to a striker. Pace, flair, finesse. He had the talents and characteristics to play out wide or down the middle.
In the 1996-97 season, he helped Monaco to Ligue 1 glory, scoring nine goals. But it wasn’t the return that made this kit so definitive for him. It represents a time when a new icon was launched. French Young Footballer of the Year in 1996, a Ligue 1 and a World Cup call-up for the 1998 tournament, Henry, as we know him today, was just being born.
The kit itself was a delightful adidas piece that gives off the ultimate retro vibe. A diagonal split as we’ve come to expect from a Monaco shirt, it was topped off with a delightful collar and worn so effortlessly cool by the man himself. Nose tape on combined with his haircut, it was a cult look for Henry.
Arsenal 2003-04 Home

This kit is the one most people will bring up when asked about Henry. It’s probably his best, and most famous season of his career. Arsenal went on to win the league unbeaten, which crowned them as The Invincibles and gave them two titles in three seasons.
Henry was instrumental, so much in fact that there is now a statue of his iconic knee slide celebration at The Emirates Stadium. He scored 30 goals in the Premier League this season, with many notable goals like his incredible solo effort in a 4-2 win over Liverpool.
The shirt became synonymous with Henry. Confidence. Composure. The O2 logo is one of the most famous sponsors in the Premier League, and this shirt remains an icon just like Henry does. Henry at his peak. The King of Highbury.
France 2006 Home and Away

You may have thought the France shirt(s) I’d include in this list would be the 1998 World Cup triumph or the 2000 EUROs win. But no, I’ve included the 2006 World Cup — a tournament France lost in the final on penalties to Italy.
While it ended with a loss, this tournament announced Henry as one of France’s legends. He played an integral part in getting his squad to the final, scoring a fantastic winning goal against Brazil in that iconic quarterfinal. He blended maturity with efficiency to lead France to the final.
The ending wasn’t the fairytale Henry would have hoped for, but the kits from this tournament are a symbol of a time in his career that defined him as not only the imperfect icon but also more than just a finisher. A leader and a Les Blues legend.
Barcelona 2008-09 Home

2009 was one of the most successful years for a football club we’ve seen. Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona won six trophies across that calendar year. And Henry was an integral part throughout it all.
He scored 26 goals across all competitions, playing in a front three alongside Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi: a terrifying trio for defenders. It was during this time that Henry adjusted. He wasn’t the main man, but was fundamental. More intelligence, more sacrifice.
The shirt was a half-and-half design. One side red, one side blue. And it is a stamp in time of one of the most legendary club sides to ever play the game. Henry was at the heart of it all.
New York Red Bulls 2013 Home

There are many shirts you’d rank above this one from Henry’s career. But this isn’t a list of the best kits. It’s a list of shirts that defined his career. And Henry at New York Red Bulls is a moment in football history that was defining, not only for him but also for MLS.
David Beckham’s move to LA Galaxy was a huge moment, and Henry at NYRB was the same level. He captained the side, acted as a teacher for the younger players, and helped put one of the biggest cities in the world on the soccer map. His influence in the States was an important part of his legacy.
The shirt featured the giant Red Bull logo across the torso. When you think of iconic players in the U.S., you think of Henry in this shirt.
From Monaco to North London to the Big Apple, Thierry Henry’s career is defined by some incredible moments and some beautiful shirts. Henry was an artist on the pitch, and each shirt is a chapter in a wonderful story. His place in the history of the game can’t be understated.
