The Best Oasis x Manchester City Moments

Manchester City and Oasis have been inextricably linked since the band reached superstardom in the ’90s. With the team celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band’s debut album Definitely Maybe, we take a look at some of the best moments from the Gallagher brothers’ history with the club.

It wouldn’t be a true celebration of Definitely Mabye’s 30th anniversary if Manchester City wasn’t involved. In true Oasis fashion, the famed English band will collaborate with the team both Gallagher brothers have loved since childhood to commemorate the landmark release of its debut album.

The celebration includes an album-inspired fourth kit for the football club, and a series of jerseys with a unique font based on Noel Gallagher’s handwriting. The latter is already in use, while the former is slated to be released on the album’s anniversary, August 29.

A teaser video for the Noel handwriting kit was posted on the club’s Instagram back in June. The video clip featured someone’s hand writing on a tablet with the caption, “Stay tuned… ”

The next day, the club posted on Instagram again, this time revealing the kit with the Noel-inspired handwriting.

Fans of the club were immediately split between loving and hating the new font, and there really was no middle ground when it came to those who embraced the Oasis script and those who absolutely despised it. Whatever side fans were on, however, many noted they’d care less about the font choice so long as the club continues its winning ways.

The fourth kit, however, is actually pretty fun. In a video posted by Football Jerseys VZ two weeks ago, fans got a preview of the jersey and all the little details that tell the parallel stories of Oasis and the football club.

With soft pastels of light blue and pink accents on the sides and sleeves, the center is a classic white with hints of pink and blue and a sonic pattern reverberating from the crest. The team’s crest also has pink highlights. On the back, more sonic print, and tucked just underneath the collar, in the same script used for the “Definitely Maybe” album cover, are the words “Definitely City.”

The accenting colors of the jersey play on little details in the album art, such as the light blue hue of the cover art and pink flamingo on the fireplace mantle.

It’s no surprise the two jerseys would have fans split on opinions. Oasis themselves have always been polarizing in their own way. And it’s no secret Noel and Liam have had such a contentious relationship as brothers and bandmates.

But that same fiery nature led to the breakthrough album Definitely Maybe. And just like their love for music, their passion for Man City has united them over the decades. In honor of the new kits, let’s take a look back at some of our favorite Oasis/Man City moments.

Liam Gallagher x Manchester City 2011-12 Home Kit

Bringing the fans closer than ever to the team they love, Liam collaborated with the club on promoting their 2011-12 home jerseys. Manufactured by Umbro, the kit features a seemingly simple design, but is actually a soundwave graphic of supporters singing the team’s famous anthem “Blue Moon.” In addition to modeling with the new kit, Liam, then with new band Beady Eye, recorded a special version of the song that was mixed into their song “The Beat Goes On.”

The very next year, Noel modeled the men’s team’s new home and away kits with Man City’s Vincent Kompany. Previous to the photoshoot the two met up at a music festival in Komany’s native Belgium. Together, the two show off the team’s new threads casually, yet confidently.

Oasis Performing At Maine Road

No greater convergence of one band’s unyielding love for their football club has come into existence before or since the legendary Oasis performance at Maine Road. Tickets for the show include the band donned in Man City attire, sitting in the stadium’s stands. Fans of the band and team filled not just the stands, but the entire pitch as well.

Noel Opting Out of the Poznan Celebration

Surrounded by celebrating Man City fans after the team’s fouth goal against Fulham back in May, Noel can be seen standing still as the away side explodes with the familiar celebration. In a later interview, Noel noted that he had a “spectacular” night out and was still feeling the effects, which is why he didn’t join in. Usually very reactive, this moment is hilarious against all the avid support from the brothers have shown over the past decades.

Oasis vs. Blur in a 1996 Celebrity Charity Match

During the “Soccer Six” charity event, held every year since 1995, Oasis, draped in Man City sky blue, took on fellow British band, Blur, who wore Chelsea’s royal blue kit. Having had run-ins on the music charts and in the press, the match garnered a lot of attention and the photos, from the bands playing on the field to Liam lying on the ground, flashing a peace sign, in a post-game fatigue, are truly memorable.
