Nike Pays Tribute to a Classic With the Hypervenom GX

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the bold Air GX boots, Nike has released a limited-edition Hypervenom that features a GX-inspired design to go along with updated technology. The boots were debuted on the pitch by Andre Silva and Mauro Icardi in last weekend’s AC Milan-Inter Milan Derby.

Just over twenty years ago, Nike unveiled the Air GX, the first boots built in Nike’s renowned Montebelluna factory, which to this day still plays a large role in all of Nike’s major boot releases. With aggressive lines and a splash of color, the Air GX represented a new generation of boots that were much flashier and edgier than classic models like the Tiempos or Copa Mundials that had been the norm.

To celebrate the Air GX’s lasting influence as well as the Montebelluna factory’s longevity, Nike has released the Hypervenom GX, which, like last month’s Adidas Predator Precision reboot, features a throwback design with updated technology.

In addition to featuring the same iconic lines of the Air GX, the Hypervenom GX is 35% lighter, thanks to Flyknit technology and updated materials. The limited-edition boot also pays tribute to the Montebelluna factory both in its insole and on its heel.

In another nod to its Italian origins, the boots were worn on the pitch by AC Milan’s Andre Silva and Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi when they faced off in the Derby della Madonnina on October 15, in which Icardi’s hat trick led to a last-minute Inter victory.

You can pick up the black and royal Hypervenom GX colorway or design your own via NikeID at Nike’s online shop.
